The Sundance Institute announced today the 11 lucky projects chosen for its Creative Producing Labs as well as the 42 producers and directors invited to the Creative Producing Summit in Sundance, Utah. The labs will take place from July 29 - August 2 and will provide each project's Producing Fellows the opportunity to advance their creative, communication, and problem-solving skills. They will also receive ongoing creative and strategic support from the institute and direct granting for further development and production.
If you have a project in pre-production, applying to the Creative Producing Lab (CPL) is not only a powerful learning experience, it's a support system for the entire life of your project. Even the process of submitting to the Lab forces you to think through a few things: your likely budget, your creative intent, your relationship to the script. Filling out the application gets you halfway to a press kit, should you eventually need one.
After the Lab itself (a five-day retreat during which Fellows hash out their visions for their respective films), the Institute continues its support with direct grants (partially funded by CPL alums), long-term advisor relationships, and marketing support – no small thing, given the prestige of the Sundance Film Festival.
Case in point: a special sub-section of Kickstarter for Sundance Festival and CPL alums.
Applications for the CPL won't open again until the Fall (November, if past years are any guide), but you can check out the submission requirements and FAQ to start prepping now.
